Published by Sadie: The Forum went very well. Our group was able to explicitly explain our project, say how ours is different from other prosthetics, and we answered every question easily. In this process, we also had a lot of fun! While the parents read our poster and asked questions, the kids customized their very own prosthetics. And, to top it all off, before they left, the got to grab a piece of candy! Some of the questions asked were what program did we use to 3D print, how did you get this idea, how did you pick dog prosthetics over another animal? We were able to answer all of these. Some of the guests told us they had a friend, or knew someone with a three legged dog, which we now have contact to thanks to the forum. Overall this went very well and I look forward to seeing what the incoming seventh graders make and do! Published by Nathan: Hello again everyone! We’re almost done creating our awesome prosthetic leg. We’ve been working very hard on making it to its best and we’ll be showing off our final product this upcoming Thursday. Our design is very simple, and it consists of three different parts. The bottom, or the foot, has two different designs. The first, looks like a normal dog foot, and the second has a half-sphere on the bottom. The second part, is the main part of the leg which can be printed at different lengths to fit the dog’s normal leg size. The last part is a cylinder that is fitted to the dog’s amputated limb to make it connect. All three pieces connect at the top or bottom using sockets that pop into place and allow for movement in the joints. We hope you excited to see the final product and we can’t wait to show it off. We also made a survey and took data that we put down below, along with our prosthetic prototype. Published by Alyse: This week, we are making our poster to show our problem/solution. We also printed our prosthetic but need to print a new one that is able to move. We are also thinking of ways to make a interactive item for our project!
Published by Alyse: So far, we have a clear path of what we are going to do. At the moment, 2 of us are drawing examples of our prototype prosthetic (see photos and videos below.) We went to get supplies like washi tape and jewels to experiment how we want our prosthetic to look. While our other partner is learning how to 3D print so he will be an expert for our project! Published by Sadie: Hi everyone!
This week we've decided that we should build a new and improved prosthetic limb for dog amputees. We would open a shop and website where you would be able customize the prosthetic 3D printed limb. You could have your dogs name "carved" into it, you can decide the color, and be-jewel it as well. For our prototype, there will be a velcro strap attaching the 3D limb to the area where the dog is missing one. We would allow the buyers to pick and try on different sizes so that the dog is most comfortable. We will sell these for around $50 to $150, although the price will vary depending on what part of the limb you need a prosthetic for. We will give the money we've collected to organizations that help animals with impaired movement. This way, we are contributing to solve our problem in two separate ways! Published by Nathan: Hi everyone! We’re back with our second official blog post! This past week, we’ve been doing lots and lots of research, to try and concentrate our topic on one small problem, to make one big change. One of the biggest things that we’ve been working on this week, is trying to find a solution to dog amputation. Some ideas that we thought about during our work times, were to try and make a special medicine for dogs, that will help to stop a dog becoming amputated before it happens. Another solution we came up with is that if we can’t stop the dogs from being amputated, we can make special dog prosthetic limbs for the dogs to wear. The dogs will be measured and fit with a stylish, customizable, prosthetic dog limb! We’re still working to pick the solution we want to work on in the end, but for now, thanks for reading, and don’t forget to read our next weekly blog post! Published by Alyse: Hello, welcome to our blog! We are 3 people trying to change the lives of amputee dogs. We are thinking about different solutions to this issue. One of the problems that go with amputee dogs is that prosthetic's are too expensive. We would like to make our prosthetic cheaper, around $50 to $100 at the most, though it will depend on your personal situation. We will post another blog soon about our progress in our research, problem, solutions, and project in general! |
